How Should We Respond to Hatred in This World? A Biblical Perspective

Every time I turn on the news, my heart sinks. Another shooting. Another act of violence. More division, more hatred. I see stories of theft, the ongoing battle over abortion, and political chaos that seems to have no end. Sometimes, it feels like evil is winning. It isn’t very encouraging, and I find myself asking:

Lord, how do I respond to this? How should I act when I see so much sin and Darkness?

When I bring these burdens to God, He always leads me back to His Word, which gives me hope.

1. Fix Our Eyes on Jesus

The first thing I remind myself is this: I cannot let the world dictate my peace. If I dwell too much on the news, my spirit becomes heavy. But when I focus on Jesus, I am reminded that He already told us these things would happen:

“I have told you these things, so that in Me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” – John 16:33. This verse reminds us that despite the troubles we face, we can find peace in Jesus, who has already conquered the world and its evils.

Jesus knew we would face days like these, yet He tells us to have peace. That’s not easy. But I’ve learned that when I take my worries to Him—whether through prayer, reading Scripture, or sitting in His presence—His peace replaces my fear.

2. Respond with Love, Not Hate

It is so tempting to respond with frustration or even anger when I see the wickedness in this world. But then I remember Jesus’ words:

“But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.” – Matthew 5:44

I must ask myself: Am I praying for the lost or just complaining about them? Am I showing Christ’s love or letting bitterness take root?

I don’t want all the hatred I see to harden my heart. Instead, I ask God to fill me with His love so I can respond as Christ would.

3. Pray Without Ceasing

When the world looks hopeless, prayer is not just a tool, it’s our greatest weapon. I have seen God answer prayers in my own life and the lives of others. He is always working, even when I can’t see it.

“If My people, who are called by My name, will humble themselves and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.” – 2 Chronicles 7:14

So, I pray. I pray for this nation, the brokenhearted, and those who commit evil acts to have a change of heart. I pray for the families who have lost loved ones to violence, for the unborn who are at risk, and for the leaders making decisions that affect us all. And when I don’t know what to pray, I say: “Lord, have mercy.”

4. Be a Light in the Darkness

The darker the world becomes, the more crucial it is for Christ’s light to shine through His people. I ask myself daily: Am I being the light?

“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.” – Matthew 5:14

This doesn’t mean I have to do something grand or public. Sometimes, being a light means speaking kindness when others spread hate. It means encouraging someone who is struggling. It means standing firm in my faith, even when the world mocks it.

Even a tiny light can break through the Darkness. So, I will not let the world’s hatred dim my faith—I will let my faith overcome the world’s hatred.

5. Trust in God’s Justice

When I see the wickedness around me, I sometimes wonder, God, how much longer? But then He reminds me:

“Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.” – Romans 12:21

Justice belongs to God, and He will right every wrong in His perfect timing. I don’t need to carry that burden—I need to be faithful to Him.

Final Thoughts

Yes, the world is dark, but Jesus is my light. Instead of letting the news drain me, I choose to cling to His truth. Instead of allowing hatred to consume me, I choose love. Instead of feeling hopeless, I will pray.

And no matter what happens, I know this:

“Behold, I am coming soon! My reward is with me, and I will give to each person according to what they have done.” – Revelation 22:12

Evil will not have the final say—Jesus will. Until He returns, I will keep my eyes on Him, walk in love, and stand firm in the faith.

Lord, help us be your light in a world of Darkness. Give us wisdom, courage, and love as we respond to the brokenness around us. Amen.
